Chapter Fourteen
I woke alone on the couch to the smell of food cooking. While it hadnât taken Mel and I long to find a comfortable position, I had evidently rejected the warmth of being wrapped and spooned. I was now stretched out on my stomach, arm draped off the side of the couch, face buried against the back. I pushed up to scan the room, wondering when Mel had gotten up.
Turned out he hadnât; Iâd just forced him onto the floor at some point.
âYou hungry?â Chloe asked from the kitchen. I yawned, wiped the drool off my chin, and forced my body to cooperate until I was sitting up. Mel was slumped on his uninjured side on the floor, covered in blankets.
âThatâs my secret. Iâm always hungry,â I said. Chloe paused in her stirring and pan-shaking to look up at me with a wink.
âWhat were you hungry for last night?â
âItânothingâI didnât want to beat you up and Mel wouldnât leave the couch.â
âSo you performed a hostile takeover?â
âDamn straight.â
Careful not to step on Melâs hand, I got up, padded toward the bathroom. By the time I was back at the bar chairs feeling slightly more awake and aware, Mel had woken up, too, and reclaimed the couch. He was rubbing the back of his neck, irritation crackling around him. I decided I didnât have to feel guilty that he was sore because it had been his idea for us to sleep together.
âOrder up,â Chloe announced. Mel pushed to his feet too, crossed the living room to the bar. Chloe winked as he took a seat but set a plate down in front of me. It was a mound of vegetables mixed in with carbs and tofu. I would have normally done my best to eat around the vegetables, but sheâd done a damn good job of making sure they were fully integrated with the carbs.
Rats.
âWhatâs on the agenda for today?â I asked, immediately before shoveling food into my mouth.
âMelâs gonna make some calls to his clients and ours and you and I are going to see Merrin.â
âWhy do I have to stay and make the calls?â Mel asked. Chloe slid a plate across the counter in front of him and I noted with some jealousy that sheâd given him double the portion Iâd gotten.
âBecause Evadne doesnât like you. And someone has to do it.â
Mel sighed but didnât argue, though I could tell some petulant part of him wanted to. We ate in silence for a bit before I felt Iâd satisfied my great and terrible hunger just enough to continue questioning her.
âWhy are we seeing Merrin?â
âBecause thisâBecause. Okay.â Chloe paused, a rare seesaw of indecisiveness wobbling in her guts for a moment before she bit her lip, and then pressed on. âWhatâs been done to Mel, taking part of his soul, it requires a witch.â
âYou think Merrin stole my wolf?â
âI donât know, but I doubt it. I donât think Evadne likes Kincade any more than she likes you.â
âSmall blessings, I guess,â Mel said, before shoveling another forkful of food into his mouth.
